We took a little family outing this evening to a live nativity put on by the Bonneville Stake and other local church denominations. We joined a large crowd on a walk through a busy Bethlehem marketplace, then on past a field of shepherds watching over their flocks, and finally to a manger scene where we listened to a narrative of the Christmas story from Luke 2 (and to a live braying donkey!). It will definitely need to become one of our Christmas season traditions.
The kids told us their favorite parts of the experience: RVC enjoyed the marketplace where she spotted a goose and some chickens and where they served hot chocolate and bagels. TLC liked "the large animal that was with a shepherd but wasn't a donkey" (in fact, it was a camel--I liked that part too). SCC enjoyed petting a goat . CAC didn't say, but I think she enjoyed her view of everything from atop Dad's shoulders.
The kids were less impressed with "Christmas Street," which we visited on our way to the nativity because we were uncommonly early. Admittedly, the neighborhood isn't showing quite the same spirit of participation I remember seeing years ago--maybe it's still in the setting-up process? TEC and I had to laugh when TLC disappointedly asked from the back seat, "So, what? We get in the car just to drive to a street and read some Christmas signs?" Oh well.
