birthdays and big imaginations

2008 has been good to us so far. We enjoyed celebrating the New Year with Val and Ben--a fun night of Mexican food, early-midnight "party poppers," and sleeping over with cousins. I didn't even wait that long to start un-decorating the house from Christmas--mostly because our tree was so dry; the lights and decorations are all packed up for another year. We've turned some attention to the house...We found ourselves with a few new things for Christmas, yet not-quite-places to put it all, particularly books. So we're contemplating purchasing a book case or two (most of our books from our move are still stacked in a laundry basket...we certainly took for granted the nice built-in bookshelves we had in Texas!) Yesterday, with the help of his dad, TEC put in a over-the-range microwave, which I'm very excited about--love the extra counter space.

January is a birthday month for us. Mine was this past week, and I was treated very well. TEC managed to do some work at home early that morning so he could enjoy breakfast with us. I got to go to lunch with my parents and sister while the kids played at Grams' house. That evening we went out for ice cream, which was fun, despite our disappointing discovery that there is no good-old-fashioned ice cream parlor in Salt Lake anymore.

TLC has his big day this week, exactly one week after mine. He's excited to be three. Already, he's made some big moves this year. Our Primary moved him up into the Sunbeams class with a couple of other January-birthday kids. Also, (I think I'm safe to say this now...I haven't wanted to jinx the progress) TLC has become quite independent in the use of the potty. Mom is more than overjoyed about that!

The kids and I started a Kindermusik class this month--it's called Family Time, so we all stay for the 45-minute class. It's been pretty fun. I'm becoming more aware of the diverse personalities of all three of them. RVC loves singing and watching herself in the ballet studio mirror. SCC doesn't care much for the structured time, but really likes dancing and moving around on her own with the props. TLC, I'd say, is happy just to have a place to run around.

After our last class, we had a rather funny discussion over lunch about imagination. I was telling SCC how pretty she looked dancing with the streamers. I added that RVC was dancing beautifully as well. Then, opting for a less-feminine complement for TLC, I commented on how high he jumped during the class.

TLC agreed. "I jumped SUPER DUPER HIGH," he said. Apparently, though, RVC had missed the jump.

"How high was it?" RVC asked.

I told her she would just have to use her imagination. This made her upset. "I don't know how to use my imagination," she protested. I assured her that she was really good at using her imagination--believe me, I see it every day. I even followed with rather bold claim that she has an imagination that's "even bigger than Daddy's." This seemed to restore her confidence, but she was still interested in talking about how to use her imagination.

I did my best to lay out the procedure: first, you close your eyes. Then, you try and picture something in your mind... I guess RVC was beginning to remember the procedure herself, because at that point she added that it's good if you move your head forward and back "in a circle like this." Though I hadn't considered this part, I agreed that that would probably help.

So that was our discussion. But a few minutes later, I happened to look over at RVC and see her eyes closed and head slowly moving forward and then back, just as she had described. I managed to hold in my laughter and wait for her to open her eyes again.

"Did you imagine it?" I asked.

"Yeah," she said.
