Out of the mouths of babes...

Too often, we let funny moments in our family go by without writing them down. Lately we've had a few that we want to remember, so here it goes...

Bedtime for R and TL is 8PM. We brush teeth, read stories, say prayers, give kisses and hugs, and say goodnight. Recently, R has become insistent on us "telling" her stories--all the time, but especially at bedtime. She tends to prefer princess stories, and is particular about which ones we can tell--"Sleeping Beauty" is a common request, "Beauty and the Beast" is okay, but some are not ("Not 'Cinderella,' Mom..."). We've tried to expand our reperotoire with stories like "Rapunzel" and "Princess and the Pea," but the truth is, T and I struggle with the whole thing. Getting the basic idea of the story out isn't too bad, but we have a hard time filling in the details. Even non-princess stories like "Hansel and Gretel" and "The Ugly Duckling" give us trouble. So we've accepted the hard fact that we're not great story tellers...but R continues to request them.

A few weeks ago, T told R a story that had an applicable moral attached. Following a few nights of R getting out of bed several times with the not-always-legitimate request to "go potty," T decided to sit her down before bedtime and tell her the story of "The Little Boy Who Cried Wolf." He did a fine job, I must say--all of the details were there, the message was explained, and our little girl was all tucked in for a good night's sleep. Minutes later, guess who was out of bed with the same excuse!... T revisited the night's lesson: "R, remember the story of the little boy?" R's reply: "It's okay, Dad, there aren't any wolves in my room."

Some of R's other quotable moments:

I'm tired of all this work! (after helping us complete the insane chore of raking up leaves in our front yard).

Now I don't have anyone to share the back with! (noting the empty carseat next to her as we left Dad and TL at the airport for their trip to Utah).

Look, Mom, I ate my cookies all gone! (about to learn that you don't get the same praise as when you finish your dinner all gone).

And it came to pass that it came to pass... (taking her "turn" to read during our family scripture time--I guess she is getting something out of it:))
